The board is a micro-ATX motherboard designed to work in any sized case of this size or larger. The color of the board is a nice black color. Starting at the upper right hand corner of the case we find that BIOSTAR’s board has a 4-pin power connector for the CPU. Below that are the solid capacitors on the board with a 50000 hour lifespan.

The CPU Socket is next on the way down the right hand side of the board. The board has four PWMs for 4-phase power to the chipsets, and the CPUs. Two additional PWMs are dedicated to the memory. This allows the board to regulate the power to the different components. There are three power indicator LEDs by the top right hand corner to indicate power is given to the board.

The CPU area is clear of obstacles and is of the Socket AM3 type. All Socket AM3 boards support only the AM3 interface as there are two extra pins on the Socket AM2+ CPU which cannot be removed to install an AM2+ CPU into an AM3 Socket. The AMD Thuban CPUs are on this interface and the TA890GXB HD board supports it out of the box with the 960T CPU booting just fine, but more on that on another article.

The CPUFAN header is to the right of the CPU Socket with the memory slots under the CPU Socket. The Thuban has the same dual channel memory controller inside as the previous Deneb core and the board has four DIMM slots to support up to 16GB of DDR3 memory. With overclocking DDR3-1600MHz is supported but the CPU supports 1333MHz memory by default. Dual channel memory is installed in pairs in two like colored DIMM slots.

The bottom of the board has the part number and certification stickers for the board. The next item is the 24-pin power connector followed by two buttons for the onboard Power and Reset buttons. The BIOS chip is next followed by the SATA ports. The SB850 Southbridge supports up to six SATA ports of the SATA 6 Gb/s variety and all of the supported ports are on the far left bottom of the board out of the way of installing a 2-slot video card into the onboard PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot. There are also two PCI slots.

The left side of the board starts off with the Front Panel I/O ports then a 3-pin CPU Header. Three USB 2.0 headers follow, bringing the total on the board to ten with the included USB ports on the back panel. The next item is a COM port and a Print port. An IR port is next followed by the S/PDIF and Front Panel Audio ports. To the left of the AM3 Socket is the 890GX Northbridge covered by a heatsink. The SB850 Southbridge is to the left of the DIMM slots on the board also covered by a heatsink.

The onboard audio is provided by a Realtek ALC892 CODEC. This board supports 5.1 audio and supports all HD Audio features. The rear I/O panel starts off with a PS/2 Keyboard/mouse port, with four USB 2.0 ports, a HDMI, a D-sub and a DVI-D port. The LAN port and three audio ports constitute the rest of the rear I/O on the board. One positive on the port is the variety of connections to monitors allowing you to connect various monitor types without an adapter. The 5.1 audio is a bit disappointing.
