Intel has a list of upcoming and current applications that are multi-core aware. In this part of the review, I will list some of the software that can take advantage of 6-core Gulftown. The list is neither comprehensive nor does it include everything; it is a representative sample of some of the more popular software. Sony Vegas Pro is a Professional Video, Audio and Blu-ray disc creation program that is optimized for the 980X. The multi-threaded playback engine simultaneously processes multiple frames for high quality real-time previews. The multi-threaded render engine spreads frame processing, effects and encodes tasks across all 12 processor threads. Maxon is a leading provider of 3D graphics software. Their Cinema 4D is a leading animation package and they have optimized their Cinebench, which is a benchmark designed to show performance in animation for the Core i7 980X. Their Cinebench benchmark is an excellent one to show OpenGL performance and is fully multi-core aware. I’m a gamer, and as such care more about games than 3D animation software or video creation programs. Several games are going to be released with optimizations for multi-core. Napoleon Total War is a turn based RTS game that is upcoming shortly. This game will offload physics, AI and animation across all CPU cores due to its multi-threaded engine. Ubisoft has released many games over the last few years. R.U.S.E is Ubisofts' upcoming WW2 RTS game. This game will have multi-threading support and allows greater animation detail and physical realism. With a Core i7-980X the horses and cows are animated and the lowest level of detail is removed. The physics workload is split into micro-tasks allowing the game to use 12 cores. Here’s a list of some of the media and productivity software that takes advantage of 4 or more processor threads:
