MSI P55-GD65 Motherboard Review :: BIOS and Overclocking

MSI uses a modified version of the American Megatrends AMIBIOS that they have used on many boards including this one. The Main Menu is split into the Standard CMOS Features, Advanced BIOS Features, Integrated Peripherals, Power Management Setup, H/W Monitor, Green Power, BIOS Setting Password, Cell Menu, M-Flash and Overclocking Profile.

Standard CMOS Features lists the Date, Time, IDE drives, SATA drives and System Information. System Information contains the CPU, the CPU Frequency, the BIOS version, the Physical Memory, and the Cache sizes. Advanced BIOS features have the Boot Sequence, the Quick Boot, the Primary Graphics Adapter, the PCI Latency Timer and HPET options.

Integrated Peripherals is where you enable or disable the USB, LAN Controller, Firewire, HD Audio controller, Extra RAID/IDE controller, On-chip ATA devices and I/O Devices. The On-chip ATA devices are where you set the RAID controller. The Power Management Setup is where you set your ACPI Function, Power LED, and Wake up Event Setup.

The majority of tweaking on this motherboard takes place in the Cell Menu. This menu has the CPU Specifications submenu, the CPU Feature support, and the various settings for OC Genie, voltage, clock speeds and more. Turbo Boost, Intel’s new automatic overclock of their new LGA-1156 CPUs, sets the Core i5 750 to 2.808 versus 2.675 by default. Using the OC Genie button the motherboard went to 3.06GHz and overclocked to 3.46GHz totally stable by using the + button to automatically overclock the CPU by 1.5MHz each step.
