The GIGBAYTE P55-UD5 motherboard is based upon Intel’s new P55 Express chipset. This chipset has done away with the Northbridge and Southbridge which is replaced by the P55 Platform Controller Hub. The P55 Express chipset has support for up to six SATA 3 Gb/second ports, 14 USB 2.0 ports and 8 PCI Express lanes. The interesting thing about the P55 chipset is that the CPU has 16 PCI Express 2.0 lanes on the CPU die instead of needing a Northbridge. The memory controller has moved the Northbridge on the CPU starting with the Core i7 family. The LGA-1156 CPU socket supports up to 2 Channels of DDR3 memory clocked at a maximum of 1333MHz. The second step was moving the other duties handled by the Northbridge on earlier chipsets to the CPU. The P55 Express chipset supports both SLI and Crossfire assuming you have a compatible motherboard and two or more PCI Express full-length slots available. Ultra Durable 3 is Gigabyte’s trademark for their design. It features 2oz Copper PCB, 50000 Hours Japanese Solid Capacitors, Lower RDS (on) MOSFETS, and Ferrite Core Chokes. The Power and Ground layers of the board incorporate 2oz of copper that lowers system temperatures by delivering a more efficient spreading of heat from critical areas of the motherboard. The six benefits of 2oz copper PCB include: 2x lower impedance, better ESD Protection, better overclocking, better power efficiency, lower temperature and lower EMI. GIGABYTE has introduced a new system management suite with their P55 motherboards called Smart 6. Smart 6 includes six utilities: Smart QuickBoot, Smart QuickBoost, Smart Recovery, Smart DualBIOS, Smart Recorder, and Smart TimeClock. Smart QuickBoot checks your hardware and upon reboot will rescan the critical components saving 3-4 seconds off boot. OS reboot powers down the PC into Suspend and Hibernate mode at the same time. Using Suspend and Hibernate allows you to turn the computer back on in a few seconds without losing data. The Smart QuickBoost allows the system to overclock the CPU with a click of the button. There are three settings in Smart QuickBoost: 1, 2, 3. Mode 1 ups the clock speed to 2.8GHz. Mode 2 increases that clock speed to 3.0GHz and a 150MHz BCLK. Mode 3 boosts the clock speed to 3.2GHz and a 160MHz BCLK. The highest mode is equivalent to Intel’s highest Turbo Boost mode. Smart Recovery allows users to backup their data and retrieves that data later even if it has been deleted. Every day Smart Recovery takes a “snap shot” of your hard drive and makes a record of any added, deleted or modified files. You can later go and retrieve that file from a previous “snap shot”. GIGABYTE has been the pioneer of DualBIOS with two BIOS chips on each motherboard. With the P55-UD5 the board has two 16mb BIOS chips. The Smart DualBIOS utility allows you to store up to 12 passwords along with a short description to keep commonly used passwords in a single place. Smart DualBIOS is password protected to prevent someone unknown from accessing these passwords. You can also store dates and a short description. Smart Recorder keeps track of your activity on the PC and when large amounts of data are copied from your PC. Smart TimeLock allows you to limit access to your PC. You can set specific time periods for computer access according to the day of the week as well as the time period that day allowing for access. You can also schedule different usage scenarios for the weekend versus the weekday, allowing children more computer time during the days when they don’t have school. Contents:
