This is the first ASUS motherboard in the Republic of Gamers line on the P55 Express chipset. The main feature of the P55 Express chipset is the move from the Northbridge and Southbridge arrangement of earlier motherboard chipsets to the singular Platform Controller Hub (PCH) of the P55 chipset which replaces the Southbridge with some of the Northbridge features taken up by the CPU.

The Core i5 CPU controls the PCI Express lanes to the graphics cards on the motherboard, meaning that you can have up to 16 lanes either in one slot or two x8 lanes controlled by a Core i5 CPU. This functionality used to be on the Northbridge. Both ATI’s and NVIDIA’s CrossfireX and SLI are supported for multiple card functionality respectively on this board.

ROG Connect is a new feature. This allows you to connect your laptop to the motherboard via a USB cable and watch the hardware POST codes and Hardware monitoring on the laptop. Gamefirst manages the flow of traffic through your LAN port, making sure you can listen to online music, download and upload files, and engage in Internet chats without losing the low ping times required for gaming.

MemPerfect allows you to use your memory settings with ease. Simply set the setting and MemPerfect will check the memory for errors and correct them automatically. Speeding HDD uses a dual channel approach to increase HDD transfer rates. CPU Level Up is an automatic overclocking utility that changes your current CPU to a faster CPU automatically. MemOK is a special compatibility mode that allows nearly any memory to be used.

ProbeIt takes all the guesswork out of multitesting by identifying where the testing should be done on 5 unique spots on the board. ASUS has put a variety of their DIY features on this board including the Q-Connector, the Q-Shield, EZ Flash 2, ASUS OC Profile, and the ASUS Crash-Free BIOS 3. The Q-Shield is without corners so installing it on the rear I/O of the motherboard won’t cut your fingers. The OC Profile allows you to determine what overclock your system is set at after testing it and saving it as a profile.
