ECS A785GM-M Black Edition Motherboard Review

The 785G chipset supports the latest AM3 CPUs from AMD including the Phenom II X4, the Phenom II x3 and the Athlon II CPUs that have been launched. Unfortunately, due to two extra pins on the AM2+ CPUs, the AM3 motherboards cannot support AM2+ CPUs. ECS's website has the full CPU Compatibility list and it includes such notables as the 955 Black Edition CPU, and the AMD Athlon II Dual Core Processor 235e ranging in TDP of 45W-140W.

The board supports DDR3-1333MHz via the CPU. AMD processors since the Athlon 64 have had the memory controller on the CPU instead of on the Southbridge as on previous CPUs and chipsets, meaning that to support higher memory frequencies, overclocking is necessary. The AM3 CPUs support Dual Channel DDR3 memory with up to 32GB supported on 4 x 240-pin DIMM Sockets. ECS says that they have tested up to 4GB sticks as that is the largest available on the market.

The new addition to the 785G chipset is the RS880 integrated graphics chip. ATI dubs this chip the Radeon HD 4200. In terms of their discrete graphics chips this is basically half a HD 4350 so the naming scheme makes sense. The HD 4200 has 4 ROPs (Render Output Unit), 8 Texture Address units, and 8 Texture Filter units at a 500MHz clock speed. The additions of DirectX 10.1 and UVD 2.0 are the only changes between this chip and the previous 780G chipset.

eJiffy is a new addition to ECS motherboards. It is a Linux based interface for fast booting the computer without booting into Windows. You can install eJiffy on a HDD and after 8 seconds after the computer boots up eJiffy is ready to provide web browsing, photo reviewing and online chat. This is very similar in concept to Express Gate, and offers an alternative if you can't boot into Windows and avoids virus attacks. The eJiffy utility comes on its own CD.
