The GIGABYTE board is in the micro-ATX form factor that is popular with HTPC users and people wanting a smaller computer that don't want a big footprint for their computer. HTPC users want low noise on their computer, so as to not interfere with the movie playing experience with a loud computer. Another factor for the HTPC user is integrated video and sound as high performance cards are not needed.

Starting at the top right hand side of the board the 8-pin power connector is located here. Below the power connector is the MOSFETs and Chokes on the board. Next is the CPU bracket. There is plenty of room around the CPU cooler to install after market CPU coolers on the board. The NB and SB are covered by heatsinks. Below the CPU bracket are the four DIMM slots that can take up to 16GB of DDR3 memory. Each pair of DIMMs is color coordinated to signify dual channel.

There is an ITE chip below the DIMM slots which is a fan controller for the motherboard. Next to the ITE chip is the 24-pin power connector. A Parallel port lies next to the 24-pin power connector, though why one needs a LPT port in this day and age is beyond me except for legacy printers still in use. Above the 24-pin power connector is the FDD connector. Next to the FDD connector is an IDE controller.

The Front Panel IO connectors are on the left hand side of the board. The GIGABYTE board has three headers for USB 2.0 devices. This brings the total USB devices supported by the motherboard to twelve, including the six on the Rear I/O area. A single Firewire header is also present, bringing that total to two including the one on the Rear I/O. An S/PDIF header rounds out the left side of the board.

There are five upwards facing SATA ports on the board. One thing that would have been nice is sideways facing SATA ports as they are easier to deal with long video cards. A long video card like the Radeon HD 4870 x2 may cover 3 of the SATA ports but that is the issue with a mini-ATX board like the MA-785MT-UD2H. The hardcore gamer is not the target market for this board anyway, as it is targeted to the Home Theater crowd.

The expansion on the board consists of a single PCI Express x16 slot for external graphics, a PCI Express x1 slot, and two PCI slots. Micro ATX motherboards tend to have limited expansion room and sometimes don't have a PCI Express x16 slot at all but this board does. The 2ND generation PCI Express slot offers double the bandwidth compared to the first generation. The PCI Express x1 slot is followed by the PCI Express x16 slot, then by the two PCI slots.

Onboard sound is provided by the venerable ALC889A CODEC from Realtek. This chip offers 10 simultaneous DACs meaning that you can run a 7.1 surround sound speaker system and the Front Panel audio simultaneously. Realtek has released chips with ALC1600 sound on them but they are vendor specific and not available on GIGABYTE motherboards. The Rear I/O on the board consists of a single PS/2 port that can be used for either mouse or keyboard, six USB ports, an external SATA port, a Firewire port, an HDMI port, a VGA port, a DVI-D port, the RJ-45 jack for the onboard LAN which is controlled by a Realtek RTL8111C PHY, and the six ports for the onboard audio.
