ASRock X58 Extreme Motherboard Review

As with virtually every motherboard based upon an Intel chipset this year, ASRock's board has the X58 chip on it. The X58 chipset is the first motherboard chipset to support the LGA-1366 interface, Triple channel memory, SLI on an Intel chipset and more. Some ASRock motherboards like the X58 Extreme have been tested with Xeon 3500 series CPUs, meaning you can use a workstation class CPU on the board.

ASRock claims this board is the first one in the world to support the EUP power standard. This is the new Power consumption standard for the European Union. EUP stands for Energy Using Product. The power consumption of a product with EUP support shall not exceed 1.00W of power when turned off. While this is not applicable to products in the US as of yet, this is the trend that we are moving towards worldwide.

The X58 Extreme motherboard has three 3 PCI Express slots for multiple graphics cards. The main difference between this board and the X58 SuperComputer is the fact that there are three full-length slots on the board versus four on the X58 SuperComputer. This allows the motherboard to support up to three NVIDIA cards or three ATI cards. NVIDIA supports up to 3-way SLI with their video cards or 4-way SLI with two GTX295s installed. ATI supports up to four graphics cards in CrossfireX mode but again the board supports up to three HD cards or two x2 cards in Crossfire mode.

ASRock Smart BIOS takes a different approach to saving changes and exiting the BIOS as compared to most motherboards. They have separate Performance Setup Default values for IDE/SATA, AHCI, RAID, Power Saving settings. There are also two menus for loading Optimized CPU OC Setting and Load Optimized DDR3 2000 OC Setting. OC Tuner is ASRock's overclocking utility they include with the motherboard. Intelligent Energy Saver uses the energy saving abilities of the Core i7 CPU to save energy in operation. Instant Boot uses the Suspend power states to power on the motherboard to OS within a few seconds. The Advanced V8 Power Phase Design of the X58 Extreme motherboard is true 8 Phase Power design.
