ASUS P6T6 WS Revolution Review

ASUS's list of features is impressive by any means. The board has a feature list like no other and has a total of 6!! PCI Express x16 Generation 2 slots for video cards. ASUS decided to include a nForce 200 chip to allow for up to true 3-way SLI on this board. Some boards on the market can't physically support 3-way SLI due to either the lack of slots or the positioning of the capacitors. The board also supports 3-way CrossfireX, making it the ultimate choice for the hardware video card enthusiasts worldwide.

The board also has support for Diagnostic LEDs throughout the board. Unlike on some other boards on the market, the P6T6 WS Revolution takes the LED a little further. There are LEDs by the CPU, DRAM, VGA card and HDD areas on the board that light up and stay lit when there is a problem with the board. Rather than just give you a diagnostic code, this allows you to diagnose problems with the motherboard by the component. It's very user friendly and much easier to find a problem area. For example, X58 boards have the memory set up to start from the second slot away from the CPU. Installing memory in the first slot caused the LED to shine which told me that there was an issue with memory.

Serial Attached SCSI is the latest hard drive standard that has evolved from the parallel SCSI standard found on many older workstation computers. SAS is backwards compatible with SATA 3.0Gbits/second, and uses the SCSI command set. ASUS includes two SAS connectors on this motherboard which is designed as a workstation board. The board also supports ASUS's SASsby card, which allows the board to add SAS cards to add more SAS devices.

The GP Diagnostics card has several neat features including a two-digit LED for error codes, a Power button, a Reset button and plugs into the board. This gives the user the best of both worlds, Diagnostic LEDs by the components and a Diagnostic LED that you can see an error code. The board is based upon Intel's new X58 chipset which supports all of the LGA-1366 CPUs on the market including the Core i7 920, 940 and 965 XE CPUs. These CPUs have the memory controller built-in so the board supports up to 12GB of DDR3-1600MHz memory when overclocked.

The Energy Processing Unit 6 was introduced in an earlier ASUS motherboard, the ASUS P5Q. The P5Q was based upon Intel's P45 chipset. The purpose of EPU-6 is to save energy by powering down the phases of the CPU, memory, chipset, and video card assuming the hardware is supported. In this day and age where the object is to save the planet from Choloroform emissions, energy saving hardware is a definite plus.

TurboV is ASUS's advanced overclocking tool that uses a microcontroller to allow precise overclocking adjustments. TurboV can also provide adjustments to the NB voltage, the NB-PCIe VOLTAGE, cpu pll Voltage, and DRAM voltage in 0.02V micro-intervals. TurboV settings can be changed without going into the BIOS or rebooting the system, making overclocking easy and intuitive. TurboV was introduced with the P6T Deluxe motherboard and also is a feature found on the P6T6 WS Revolution motherboard. ASUS's Express Gate is an Operating System that can boot straight from a USB Flash drive. Some ASUS boards have built-in Express Gate hardware but the P6T6 WS Revolution requires a separate drive not included to boot off of. You can boot in up to 5 seconds to an OS that allows web browsing, Chat, Email and more.
