The X48 chipset supports all current Intel CPUs including the Core 2 Duo, the Core 2 Extreme, Wolfdale and Yorkfield CPUs. ECS has validated the X48T-A to work with all current CPUs of those generations including the latest and greatest Q9550 or QX9770 CPU with the 12MB L2 cache. ECS’s website has a CPU Qualification list for every motherboard so I would suggest looking at the list before building a new system as I would suggest for any new motherboard purchase.

The X48 chipset supports DDR3 or DDR2 memory depending upon what the manufacturer fits onto their particular motherboard. The X48T-A motherboard supports up to 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 memory on four 240-pin DDR3 memory sockets. As we move further along into 2008 and into 2009, DDR3 memory will be more prevalent on every motherboard chipset including the AMD processors. One feature that the X48 chipset supports is XMP memory. XMP stands for eXtended Memory Profile and uses the extra space on the SPD settings to allow for higher voltages and overclocks of the memory.

The Motherboard Intelligent BIOS is where all the overclocking is done in the BIOS. MIB is pretty nifty in several ways which I’ll cover in the BIOS section of the review. Quooltech II is ECS’s trademark for their copper tube chipset cooler. Cooling on the X48 Northbridge and the ICH9 Southbridge is something I’ll cover in the Layout section but it should be sufficient for cooling the chipset. One important feature of all Intel X48 chipset motherboards is the ability to do Crossfire X with ATI video cards. The X48T-A has two PCI Express x16 Generation 2 video card slots that can handle Crossfire X as long as the cards are the same.
