The new Intel chipset has a few features that set it apart from the earlier Intel chipsets and I thought Iíd go over them. The chipset is based upon 65 nanometer technology meaning that the P45, along with the G45 and X48 are the first Intel chipsets to be based upon that new technology. One caveat on the new chipset is the non-support of the FSB1600MHz QX9770 CPU. MSI states they support the CPU with an OC Jumper on the motherboard. Memory support on the motherboard chipset is rather interesting. The P45 chipset supports DDR2-800MHz memory with unofficial support for DDR2-1066MHz depending on the manufacturer. DDR3-1066MHz is also supported by the chipset, though DDR3 memory goes up to 1600MHz or 2000MHz if Intelís Turbo Memory is enabled.

PCI Express is a Point to Point (PtP) Serial connection between the motherboard and a peripheral. The P45 supports PCI Express Generation 2.0 on the two PCI Express x16 slots. When two video cards are installed on the motherboard, such as two 4870 cards, the two slots operate in x8 mode. The second generation PCI Express slots allows for up to double the bandwidth of the first generation slots and offer up to 4GB/second to each video card.

DrMOS is the Integrated Driver MOSFET chip on the board that is MSIís second generation DrMOS chip. It offers up to -6W power loss compared to the legacy MOSFET chips. MSI claims that it offers the highest power efficiency, up to 93.1%. The memory chips and Northbridge chips use a 2-phase design, allowing up to 93.6% improved power efficiency from legacy one-phase power. This allows MSI to offer 128 levels of voltage adjustment in the BIOS.

Xpress Cool is MSIís trademark for their cooling system on the motherboard with DrMOS. They claim a temperature 16C lower than legacy D-Pak MOS under full load. The MSI board comes with a 5-pipe heat pipe cooling system called Circu-Pipe 2. MSI claims that the Circu-Pipe 2 offers up to 70C difference than without it.

RapidBoost allows the user to overvolt the system higher due to the higher density in the Voltage Regulator. The DrMOS chip allows the end-user to have increased performance and fast response to load transients, meaning that the board will diagnose problems with overvoltage adjustments faster than without the chip being a single chip. Going green is the ďInĒ thing. Everyone from Supermarkets to major computer component suppliers like MSI is trying to do their part to save the environment. The P45 Platinum comes with a GreenPower Center that activates power saving mode with a single click of the mouse. The GPC monitors and manages the motherboardís power configuration with GreenPower Genie once it is activated.
