The MSI K9A2 uses the standard American Megatrends AMIBIOS that is in use on some motherboards on the market today. AMIBIOS 1.4 was used for all testing as it supports the new Phenom X4 and X3 CPUs that have just hit the market. The main menu is split into Standard CMOS Features, Advanced BIOS Features, Integrated Peripherals, Power Management Setup, PNP/PCI Configuration, HW Monitor, and User Settings.

The Advanced BIOS Features menu is where the Boot Sector Protection, IOAPIC Function, Chipset Features and Boot Sequence are. The Chipset Features submenu is where you can enable/disable the PCI Express Gen 2 High Speed mode for the graphics card. The Boot Sequence is useful for setting up the system to boot off the CD-ROM when installing a operating system.

The Cell Menu is where the overclocking is done. You can adjust the CPU frequency here as well as the memory frequency. DOT3 is MSIís automated overclocking utility, of course, the preset overclocking is probably not enough for the true enthusiast. Next are the Cool Ní Quiet settings, FSB frequency, HT Ratio, CPU multiplier settings.

The CPU Frequency can be set from 200-600MHz. AMD CPUs are limited to around 350MHz so this has a lot of headroom that probably wonít be used by any AMD CPU for a while. The HTT 3.0 link has multiplier settings from 1x-13x with a frequency range from 200-2600MHz with the 8750 X3. Memory Timings is also done in the Cell menu. Using a Phenom X3 8750 I was able to overclock the CPU to a respectable 3.0GHz from the 2.4GHz default clock. As the first Triple Core CPU, the Phenom X3 is an excellent choice for those that donít want to spend $300 on the X4 CPUs or have an AMD system and donít want to switch to the Intel side of things. FSB was able to be taken up to 500MHz with few problems.
