EVGA NVIDIA 790i SLI Ultra / 9800GX2 1GB Review :: Conclusion
Okay, there are two things to talk about in the end-game, the 790i motherboard and its results as well as the results of the 9800GX2. Let’s talk about the motherboard a bit first. The new 790i motherboard brings NVIDIA up to speed on many of the features that have left them a bit dragging behind Intel for the last two quarters and makes a strong comeback on the new 790i. DDR3 was one of the most lacking features in the 780i series and is addressed well in the 790i as it can handle up to 2000MHz EPP DDR3 memory without a hitch. This and PCIe 2.0 are the main new features to be seen here and they both bring a bit more performance to the table when combined with the right system parts that enable these features to shine. Overall the new 790i offers good performance and excellent overclocking features that make it attractive to those wanting to build a high-end Dual-Core or better SLI based system.
The new 9800GX2 is a great card for anyone who has a 24” or bigger monitor as the card really begins to rock in resolutions of 1920X1200 or larger. In these instances this card is the fastest single slot solution there is on the market currently and cannot be touched by ATI’s 3870X2 card. However if you only have a 22” or below monitor this card will really not help you all that much as it is made for the extreme high-end of the spectrum and the ATI 3870X2 is still a solid competitor at resolutions up to 1680X1050 and below. Price is another consideration as the new 9800GX2 is a bit on the pricey side for most users as it comes to market with a $599.00 price tag attached. Be clear however the 9800GX2 is not geared for the meek of heart or money and is a serious PC investment, but if you are serious have the right monitor and want unsurpassed performance, the 9800GX2 is the A ticket. In a final conclusion I want to mention again how well EVGA treats their customers as this is a selling point beyond the numbers for the product itself and can help make the difference when choosing who you buy from. The ESA aspect of the NVIDIA product line is also something to consider as it does help in the daily system monitoring aspect of your PC and can definitely be a life saver if something is not working properly or failing. Overall both these products deserve a Hot Product award as they are new, offer excellent performance and features and take NVIDIA to the next level of gaming. Stock of these products should also become very available in the days to come and rumor has it NVIDIA even has another weapon to add to their arsenal coming out very shortly. For now though, NVIDIA has done a good job in bringing a bit of fresh air to a somewhat stale market. Doc out
