NVIDIA SLI chipsets require that two like NVIDIA video cards be used for SLI mode (i.e. two 7900GTXs two 8800GTXs two 6800 Ultras etc.) Their competition allows video cards from different chipsets to be used (i.e. two x1950XTXs or a X1950XTX+X1900XTX), but their chipsets also generally require an Crossfire cable which is easy to knock off the system. NVIDIA chipsets require an SLI bridge which is included with the motherboard.
