ATI sent a retail board based upon the AMD 690 chipset from ASUS, the ASUS M2A-VM board to evaluate the new chipset with. The board features DVI and D-Sub connections for the integrated video. The main push of the 690 chipset is the inclusion of HDMI connection for the integrated video, but ATI ran out of those boards for reviewers and we received the DVI version.

CPU Socket

The chipset supports all current Socket AM2 CPUs including the 6000+, the 5200+, the FX-62 and earlier CPUs on that platform. AMD sent their board with a 5200+ which I will be reviewing shortly, which worked flawlessly out of the box. The standard 5000+ we use in testing was used for the integrated video benchmarks and the system tests.

DIMM slots

The board comes equipped with four DIMM slots for memory, and supports up to 8GB of unbuffered ECC and non-ECC DDR2 800 MHz memory. DDR2 memory is available at frequencies over 1066MHz, but the current best standard is 800MHz DDR2. The ASUS M2A-VM worked well with XMS2 8500 (1066MHz) and 6400 memory (800MHz), seeing two sticks of each and clocking them to 800MHz.

The integrated audio CODEC on the ASUS M2A-VM is the REALTEK ALC883 CODEC. This fully supports the High Definition Audio standard which brings support for 7.1 surround sound, Dolby Digital and multiple audio streams to integraed audio. The addition of a Creative Labs X-Fi sound card will increase performance due to less CPU utilization, but the REALTEK is a step up from the AC'97 integrated audio standard.

Four SATA ports

Many boards on the market today have six or even 10 SATA ports on them. The ASUS M2A-VM comes equipped with four SATA 2 compliant ports, offering the ability to run RAID 0, 1, 5 JBOD modes through ATI's AHCI controller. The board also comes with a single IDE connector and a FDD connector. As the board is a mini-ATX form-factor motherboard the drive expansion is
