The high-end AMD Athlon market is dominated by the NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI chipset at the moment. The AMD equivalent chipset does not have the traction that the nForce 590 SLI does. NVIDIA currently has over 60% of the AMD motherboard chipset market, with SLI also being the dominant multiple graphics card solution on the market (according to a recent Steam survey over 90% of the multiple graphics cards solutions for their surveys are SLI.

The problem with the nForce 590 SLI chipset is that it is targeted towards the high-end of the motherboard marketplace. Not everyone has the $200 that a high-end motherboard would ask for. So where does the user turn if they want a mainstream board. NVIDIA launched the nForce 570 SLI for SLI users, the nForce 570 Ultra for the performance single card market and the nForce 550 for the value mainstream segment. Biostar is a Taiwanese motherboard manufacturer founded in 1986, when I was still in High School. They manufacture motherboards, video cards, mini computers and more. The last Biostar motherboard I reviewed was the TForce 590 SLI. The board on the test bench today is the Biostar TForce 550 board based upon NVIDIA's nForce 550 chipset
