ASUS P5B-E Motherboard Review :: BIOS and Overclocking

ASUS uses the American Megatrends AMIBIOS for their P5B-E motherboard modified slightly for ASUS's purposes. The BIOS is split into several categories: Main, IDE Configuration, Advanced, Power, Boot and Tools. The main category has the System Time, Date, Legacy Diskette A, and IDE configuration. It also contains a System Information sub category.

The FSB frequency can be adjusted in the advanced tab. You can set the FSB manually with options from 100MHz to 600MHz in 1 MHz increments. The choices for DDR2 memory are DDR2-533 (4300), DDR2-667 (5300), DDR2-800 (6400), and DDR2-889 and 1067MHz which is the latest standard DDR2 frequency available. The South Bridge and PCI Express frequency can be set from 90-150Mhz in 1 MHz increments.

Voltage adjustment is also possible on the P5B-E. CPU Voltage can be set from 1.2250V to 1.7000V in 0.0125V increments. Memory voltage can be set from 1/80V to 2.45V in 0.05V steps. The choices for NorthBridge Core Voltage are 1.25V, 1.40V 1.55V and 1.70V and Auto. SouthBridge Core Voltage can be set from 1.50V to 1.80V in 0.1V steps. Overclocking on the P5B-E was limited by the Pentium 670 3.8GHz we use for testing motherboards with. The maximum that this processor normally overclocks is to 4.3 GHz, and I was able to overclock the CPU to that level with the P5B-E. Note, that overclocking the FSB was limited to 250MHz, not bad but not spectacular either when lowering the voltage and multiplier.
