4-pin PSU connectors have been the norm for AMD motherboards for a long time. EPS12V power connectors came into the vogue with the Intel LGA-775 platform. GIGABYTE provides a 8-pin EPS12V power connector right next to the CPU Socket, giving direct line of sight to the PSU, instead of placing it behind the CPU Socket possibly impeding airflow. The 24-pin power connector is below the DIMM slots.

GIGABYTE decided against cooling the M59SLI-S5 North and South Bridges with fans. Instead of fans, they chose to have a Heat Pipe cooling system. The South Bridge heated air would be transferred along the Heat Pipe to the North Bridge then to the grill on the top of the motherboard. GIGABYTE terms this Silent-Pipe technology, the same term they use for their silent video cards.

The nForce 590 SLI chipset supports up to 10 USB 2.0 ports. GIGABYTE provides headers for three additional USB 2.0 brackets, bringing the total supported by this motherboard to the 10 that the chipset supports. Two IEEE-1394 headers are present bringing Firewire support to the board, bringing the total to 3 Firewire ports on the board with the soldered Firewire port on the back panel.

The MOSFETs and transistors are aligned right in a row on top of the CPU Socket. This neat arrangement means that the grill that takes the superheated air from the NB and SB also cools the MOSFET area. The GIGABYTE board has two cooling fan headers on the board and the CPU Fan header. I prefer it if the board has three headers for fans. The Front Panel I/O is labeled and color-coded.
