ABIT AW8D Motherboard Review

The AW8D board is an excellent example of an Intel 975X board with one rather big exception. Total lack of support for the new Core 2 Extreme and Core 2 Duo CPUs means that those wanting this motherboard are limited to the current 965 and below CPUs. As more and more Core 2 CPUs reach the market, replacing the 9xx and 8xx series, this means future upgrading is limited.

Feature-wise, besides the aforementioned deficiency, the AW8D is an excellent example of modern motherboards, with the included accessories and features you want including 6 SATA ports, High Definition Audio, support for ATI's Crossfire solution and more. Performance on the board was exemplary with the 3.8GHz 670 CPU we use in testing, scoring among the highest on the Intel platform to date.

Just a note to those following our scoring system and awards system. The drawback of no Conroe support when it's Intel's big push as we go into the fall, and going forward prevents this board from getting an Editor's Choice award, even though it would qualify for the award based upon our scoring system.
