The 945GMH-RH board has a Socket 775 interface for the CPU. The 945 chipset takes all available Intel 775 CPUs including the 955 and the 840 Dual Cores, the 670 and below Single cores and the Celeron D processors that are Socket 775.Intel introduced the 915 and 925 chipsets introducing the Dual Core CPUs, that required the use of a new chipset. Intel quickly replaced the 925 with the 955. Late last year Intel introduced their newest chipset the 945 and 975 chipsets and support for Core Duo CPUs.

GIGABYTE's board sports 4 240-pin DIMM (Dual In-line Memory Modules) slots. The board supports up to 4GB of dual channel DDR II 667 MHz memory. Dual channel mode is activated when memory is placed in like colored memory slots. Many mini-ATX boards only sport 2 DIMM slots but GIGABYTE decided to outfit the GMH-RH with the normal 4 slots.

PCI Express x16 lock

Device expansion on the board is limited by the form factor size. GIGABYTE includes a PCI Express x16 slot for an add-on graphics cad, 2 PCI slots and a PCI Express x1 slot for the newer devices that use that standard. An Intel Pro1000 integrated LAN PHY on the PCI Express bus is included, giving the board a Gigabit LAN connection.

Drive expansion on the board is fairly typical of motherboards today. 4 SATAII ports provides up to 3 Gb/second of transfer rate. Native Command Queuing is supported by the ICH7R controller, as is RAID 0, 1, 0+1 and 5 modes with the Intel Matrix Storage Technology. An IDE controller and a Floppy drive controller make up the remainder of the board's onboard drive expansion.

The AC'97 audio standard has been replaced by the High Definition Audio (HDA) standard. A Realtek ALC882 CODEC is provided by GIGABYTE on the 945 board. This provides up to 7.1 surround sound audio+2 channels for independent stereo sound output. ALC882 supports EAX 1.0 and 2.0, A3D, Direct Sound 3D and HRTF 3D Positional Audio. Dolby Digital Live, Dolby Home Theater and Dolby Master Studio software is included.

Rear Panel I/O ports include:1 PS/2 Keyboard port, 1 PS/2 mouse port, 1 parallel port, 1 S/PDIF Out port, 1 S/PDIF In port, 1 VGA port, 4 USB 2.0 ports, 1 Firewire (IEEE-1394a) port, 1 RJ-45 jack for the LAN, and 6 audio jacks for the onboard audio. I like the layout of the I/O but feel that the Parallel port could have been replaced by 2 more USB 2.0 ports (a common complaint from me as Parallel only printers are becoming rare these days.
