The GIGABYTE Quad Royal SLI board is based upon the NVIDIA nForce4 for Intel SLI chipset. This chipset supports all current Intel LGA-775 CPUs including the newly announced 955 Presler CPUs and the Dual-Core 840 CPUs with a simple BIOS update. One thing about NVIDIA's chipsets is the support for all Intel CPUs, something that's not necessarily true about the equivalent Intel chipset motherboards.

GIGABYTE outfitted this board with four DIMM (Dual In-line Memory Module) slots. With a 64-bit Operating System like Linux or 64-bit Windows, the board supports up to 8GB DDR2 memory. With a 32-bit Operating System, the board only recognizes 4GB (32x32), but for most users 4GB is sufficient. Memory supported by the board includes both DDR2 667 and 533MHz speed modules.

The name of the board is the GIGABYTE GA-8N Quad Royal SLI. The reason for the Quad is the ability of the board to run 4 graphics cards together in SLI mode. To facilitate this, the motherboard has 4 PCI Express x16 slots, 2 PCI Express X1 slots and a PCI slot. This board supports ATI Crossfire as well. One thing GIGABYTE has included is the Paddle to switch from Normal to SLI mode. Another is the 3D1 switch, which allows the motherboard to use 3D1 video cards in its PCIe slot.

PATA ports

Drive expansion on this board is ok. 4 SATA ports is the standard for motherboards today. The nForce4 supports 4 SATA ports natively. NVIDIA's chipset supports RAID 0, 1, 0+1, 5, 10 and JBOD modes. Also on the board are 2 PATA connectors with support for 4 IDE drives and a floppy drive connector for floppy drive connections. One thing GIGABYTE could have done was include a 2nd SATA controller, as many motherboards come with 6, 8, or even 10 SATA connections.

Onboard audio on the board is provided by a Realtek ALC850 CODEC. The 850 supports 7.1 Surround-Sound. NVIDIA has introduced support for Intel's HDA (High Definition Standard) with their 6150 chipset, but the ALC850 is AC'97 compliant. The CODEC supports DirectSound, EAX 2.0, A3D and the other sound APIs. Hopefully we'll see more NVIDIA based motherboards with HDA support this year. Input and Output ports on the back end of the back panel I/O are typical for a motherboard. They include 4 USB 2.0/1.1a ports, 1 IEEE 1394a connector, 2 RJ45 ports for the LAN, 6 Audio ports (4x Line-Out/1x Line-in/1x MIC), 1 Coaxial S/PDIF out port, 1 Optical S/PDIF Out port, 1 PS/2 Keyboard and Mouse port, and 1X LPT port.
