The ASUS P5DL2-VM is based upon Intel's 945G chipset. This is the mainstream chipset Intel announced at the same time as it's bigger brother the 955X. The chipset supports all current Intel Land Grid Array (LGA-775) CPUs including the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition and the Dual Core CPUs. The chipset supports up to a 1066MHz FSB and also supports the EMT64 CPUs as well.

ASUS outfitted the P5DL2-VM board with 4 DIMM (Dual In-line Memory Modules) slots, giving support for up to 4GB of unbuffered non-ECC DDR2 memory. The 945 chipset supports DDR and DDR2, but most Intel based systems come with DDR2 support only. There is support for 667MHz and 533MHz DDR2 memory on the board.

Add-in card expansion on the board is rather limited due to the mini-ATX form factor size of the board. One PCI Express x16 slot is present for video cards, one PCI Express x1 slot for PCI Express devices and two PCI slots for legacy devices is present on the board. If you have a two-slot video card, one of the PCI slots will be covered. One thing about the positioning of the PCI Express x16 slot is a normal sized video card will cover the memory slots, forcing the user to remove the video card before adding/removing new memory.

The P5LD2-VM has 4 SATA ports onboard controlled by the Intel ICH7 North Bridge. This chip does not support RAID arrays and the drives are seen as separate in Windows. In this day and age where every motherboard manufacturer has gone to including RAID support in their motherboards, it's rather disappointing ASUS didn't include it on the P5DL2-VM. There are two IDE ports on the board and a floppy connector, rounding out the drive support.

The input/output area of the P5LD2-VM motherboard is populated by 4 USB 2.0 ports, a Parallel port, a COM1 port, a D-Sub port, a RJ45 jack for the Gigabit LAN and 6 audio jacks for the onboard audio. The audio jacks include a Rear Speaker Out, a Side Speaker Out, and a Line In, a Line Out, a Subwoofer and a Microphone port. Onboard audio is provided by a Realtek ALC882M chip. This chip supports Intel's High Definition Audio standard, offering 7.1 surround sound and 192 KHz/24-bit audio support.
