Being a SLI based motherboard; the AN8 SLI supports all current Socket 939 AMD CPUs, including the Athlon X-2 4800 CPUs Athlon 64 and Athlon FX CPU series. One of the advantages of the AMD platform is the fact that you can use the dual core CPUs on the same chipset. There are 4 DIMM (Dual In-line Memory Modules) slots on the board supporting up to 4GB of unbuffered non-ECC DDR400 memory.

Expansion on an SLI motherboard is dominated by the fact that two full-length PCI Express x16 slots are included on the board. Above the first PCI Express x16 slot is a PCI Express x1 slot. In between the two PCI Express x16 slots is a second PCI Express x1 slot. Be aware that if you put a 2-slot video card such as the GEFORCE 6800 Ultra into the PCI Express x16 slots, it may cover the adjacent PCI or PCI Express x1 slot. Also present on the board are two standard (Old School) PCI slots.

ABIT includes 4 SATA2 ports on the board. SATA2 has a theoretical transfer rate of 3GB/second instead of the 1.5GB/second of SATA1. Many boards come with 6 or 8 or even 10 but to the average user 4 are more than enough to satisfy most system configurations. There are two IDE ports angled sideways and a floppy disk controller rounding out the drive expansion on the board. Sideways IDE ports make for easy insertion/removal of the cables and help for better airflow, being out of the way of the air current.
