Foxconn WinFast NF4K8MC-RS Motherboard Review :: Layout and Bundle

I feel like a couple of good things about the layout of the board need to be mentioned right off. The DIMM slots do not cover the PCI Express X16 slot, allowing for easy removal and installation of memory modules without taking out the video card first. Too many motherboard manufacturers place the memory modules in a position where an AGP or PCI Express video card would block the first or even the first and second slots. One thing about the layout I did not like was the positioning of the 4-pin power connector. This is below the CPU socket area making airflow an issue for overclockers. There are only two fan connectors on the board, with the third one occupied by the MCP fan.

Setup went without incident. One nice touch is the inclusion of a SATA driver floppy, allowing for easy installation under Windows XP without needing to search for a driver floppy or making one yourself, as you'd find on a Gigabyte board. Foxconn includes a fan on the MCP, allowing for efficient cooling of the chipset. Another nice touch on setup is the nice layout of the SATA ports. The ports are situated under the chipset fan, and PCI slots. This position allowed easy access to installing a SATA HDD without bending the cable around the video card, as one board I have seen forced me to do.

Bundle

  • Foxconn NF4K8MC-RS motherboard
  • CPU retention clip
  • USB 2x Port bracket
  • 2 SATA cables
  • 1 SATA power cable
  • Driver CD
  • Norton's Internet Security Suite
  • SATA driver floppy
  • 2x IDE cables
  • 1x Floppy cable
  • back plate

One thing about bundles is that you will likely not have extra cables unless you have a test lab like Motherboards.org does. We have access to extra IDE cables and SATA cables and power connectors, but most people do not. Foxconn included 2 SATA cables with their package and one power cable to supply power to them. I would have preferred 4 cables, as there are 4 SATA ports on the motherboard. Also present are two IDE cables and a floppy drive cable, bringing support to the maximum IDE devices found on the board. Foxconn included a 2-port USB bracket bringing the maximum USB ports up to six included in the package.

Software wise the bundle on the board is rather uninteresting. The first time I installed Norton's Internet Security suite from the drivers CD, I could not access my home network due to the Firewall being turned on. After turning off the Norton's Firewall and NVIDIA's Firewall, I had all sorts of issues. Somehow, during this the system contracted the Blaster Worm. This rather nasty worm automatically restarts the computer at boot. After reformatting the hard drive and installing the drivers again, I ran the benchmarks and test software without further issue. The Norton's Internet Security suite is a 90-day version. Also included is a 90-day trial version of Corel's WordPerfect 12 software. You can of course purchase the full version if you like it later.

Foxconn has it's own set of utilities for their motherboards called the "Superstep" utilities. The utility monitors fan speeds, voltage, temperature, clock speed for the CPU/PCI/PCI Express and alarms. The overclocker will enjoy the easy one button overclock of the CPU. Simply raise the external CPU frequency. The temperature monitor will indicate how hot the CPU is. At the default 4000+ clock speed of 2.4 GHz, the temperature read 48 degrees Celsius, which is acceptable with the standard cooling used.
