It has been an interesting year in computers so far. On the video card side, NVIDIA and ATI have released new cards based upon new architectures and feature sets. On the CPU side, AMD has released the Socket 939 platform for their high-end Athlon 64 and Athlon FX platforms. Early in July, Intel finally released their next generation chipsets the 915G and 925X.

The new 915G platform and its bigger brother both nearly redefine everything in the computer space today. Where once, IDE hard disk drives mostly dominated the retail segment, today, that market is taken up by SATA drives. Where once, AGP video cards were the big thing, today that segment is taken up by PCI Express Graphics cards. And despite some documented growing pains including a recall of the 915G chipset due to a film not being removed, for the foreseeable future this platform will be dominant.
