With the advent of inexpensive SSD drives making the HDD the second choice for the gaming enthusiast the choice to get more storage or faster overall system performance is becoming harder to justify. The average SSD drive has become the drive to store your Operating System and main programs for speed and a HDD to back up your music, movies and saved games. But not everyone has the necessary space or wants to have multiple drives and many gamers are pushing for a drive with the best of both worlds.

Western Digital has seen the rise of the SSD drive and the need for their HDDs to wane. There are several solutions to compete, develop your own SSD drive which they have done, and develop a larger capacity HDD with improvements to speed to give another choice to the enthusiast. Large capacity SSD drives are still very expensive making a middle ground where the user can purchase a HDD with high speed a good place to target. Traditionally, Western Digital has had a "Raptor" drive as the top of the line HDD with performance exceeding other hard drives on the market due to its high spindle speed. They have released a line of SSDs, but these drives do not currently have the capacity of their standard HDD.
