The release of the Evergreen family of video cards from AMD late last year was an interesting one in that their top to bottom family of video cards had no competition for nearly six months. Even today, with the launch of NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 480 and 470 cards, ATI has little competition as the vast majority of video card sales are in the mainstream and value side of the market.
The top performing member of the Redwood family of cards is the HD5970 which had two of the chips used on the HD 5870 on it clocked at a lower clock speed than the HD 5870 which is the highest specked single GPU card. This card offers more performance than any other single card on the market. At default clock speeds the 5970 is awesome. Several of the card manufacturers have decided to do non-reference design. Sapphire is a long time maker of ATI based video cards. They decided to release an overclocked version of the HD 5970 with 4GB of memory and today’s review is on that card.
