The RADEON HD 5830 is based upon AMD’s Cypress chip which also forms the basis of the HD 5870, the HD 5850 and the HD 5970 cards. This is a 2.15 billion transistor chip manufactured on TSMC’s 40nm process. The die size of the HD 5830 chip is 334mm2. This compares quite favorably to the die size of the NVIDIA GT200 series which is 576mm2.
The HD 5830 has 1120 Stream Processors which is 480 less than the HD 5870, 320 less than the HD 5850 and 320 more than the HD 5770 chip. The HD 5830 has 56 texture units, 64 Z/Stencil ROP units and 16 Color ROP units. As you can see, the HD 5830 is a chip which is in between the specifications of the HD 5850 and the HD 5770, hence the name which positions it in that category.
The HD 5xxx series is the first video cards to support DirectX 11, which is the newest graphics API (Application Programming Interface) from Microsoft. DirectX 11 brings features like Tessellation, DirectCompute, and multi-threading, improved texture compression, Compute Shaders, Hull Shaders and more. DirectX 11 games have started being released including AVP3, Dirt2 and more are on the way.
Eyefinity is ATI’s multi-monitor display technology unique to the HD 5xxx series. Each HD 5830 can use up to three monitors with one of them being required to use the DisplayPort interface to get three monitors working at the same time. NVIDIA has a similar technology that requires two video cards to be in SLI mode to do it. The advantage of the ATI solution is that one card is all that is required to do three monitors.
