The unit has a white front which is cool sitting in a home office setting. The white also runs the bottom base of the unit. The top cover for the unit is a dark silver or gunmetal color. The unit itself measures a mere 230mm by 168 by 184mm cubed making it easy to fit the unit in an unobtrusive location on a desk or under the table.

Starting at the front of the unit we find that Synology has included a grill on top where the CD-ROM on a system would normally go. Synology has put the LED lights for the Status and LAN on the left side of the front. The middle of the front has a Power button. To the right of that are four further LEDs that indicate HDD activity and presence. If a HDD is lit up it is present.

The back of the unit has two 80mm fans. This is enough to cool the 800MHz CPU inside the unit. The DS410J has two USB 2.0 ports. These are used to attach USB hard disks to the unit. There is a DC In connector used to connect the A/C Power unit to the DS410J. A Gigabit LAN RJ-45 port rounds out the back of the unit. The part number and serial number sticker is next to the USB ports. Holding the case together are four thumb screws you need to take off to get inside.
