AMD launched their latest generation video chip series the Evergreen family in September of last year with the release of the HD 5870 and HD 5850 cards. Later that year, ATI released the Juniper chip with the HD 5770 and HD 5750 cards. The problem with those two launches is the vast majority of video card sales is in the under $100 price range and not the multiple hundred range that those cards would entail.
Early this year AMD announced the RADEON HD 5670 card. This card is targeted for the $99 price range. Today AMD is announcing their latest card, the HD 5450 which is targeted on the very low end of the market at $39 the same as the HD 4350 was targeted at. The very low end of the video card market is a lucrative market as the GeForce 4MX proved several years ago which did not even feature Pixel Shaders but sold like hotcakes due to the low price and decent performance. Sapphire was kind enough to send a review sample and today’s review is on the HD 5450 card.
