    XFX’s Radeon HD 5970 is based upon ATI’s Cypress family of products that constitute their DirectX 11 family. The HD 5870 is based upon a chip called Redwood with 1600 Stream Processors. The Hemlock which the HD 5970 is called is based upon two of the Redwood chips meaning that the card has 3200 Stream Processors.

    There are 160 texture units on the HD 5970 card, which is double that of the HD 5870. There are also 256 Z/Stencil units, and 64 Color ROP units. The HD 5970 is a monster of a video card with double the functional units of the previous highest end card on the market. This card is clocked at 725MHz for the core, 1GHz for the memory and has a theoretical computing power of 4.64 TeraFLOPS in Single Precision Mode.

    The HD 5970 has two memory controllers each with 1GB of 1GHz GDDR5 memory with a 256-bit memory bus. This means that each of the two graphics chips on the card has 128GB of memory bandwidth dedicated to the card. GDDR5 memory bandwidth is double that of the GDDR3 or GDDR4 memory used in earlier graphics cards. With 256GB of memory bandwidth, the HD 5970 should have plenty of bandwidth to feed the 3200 SPs and 80 ROPs of this card.

    DirectX 11 is the next step in Microsoft graphics APIs. DirectX 11 adds Hardware Tessellation, Direct Compute, Shader Model 5.0, multi-threading, order-independent transparency to the graphics API. DirectX 11 allows for longer Shader programs to be written for the graphics card. Other uses for the graphics card besides games have come to the forefront with recent graphics cards. DirectCompute serves a similar function to CUDA for Direct3D, using the multiple processors on a graphics card to do computational tasks.

    Eyefinity is the trademarked name for ATI’s multi-monitor setup with their new cards. Each of the HD 5xxx series has the ability to display on three monitors or more. There is an Eyefinity version of the HD 5870 which can display on up to six monitors at one time without another card. The HD 5970 has two DVI-I ports and a DisplayPort allowing up to three monitors to be attached to the card. ATI showed off a computer running four HD 5870 cards in CrossfireX mode with 24 monitors hooked up to the system. A three monitor system has higher display capabilities than two with a maximum resolution of 7680x1600 with three monitors connected.
