Batman Arkham Asylum is the latest game from the makers of Tomb Raider, Eidos. This game is one of the ones to fully use PhysX effects with weakened walls that spew out chunks of plaster when hit by a thug’s head for example. Two Radeon HD 5750s running with 4x FSAA and 16x AF were fully playable up to 1280x1024 in this game with frame rates above 60. Two HD 5770s in Crossfire mode also were fully playable but up to 1680x1050 resolution with 4x FSAA.

Resident Evil 5 is the latest in a long series of games that date back to the 1990s in the same time frame as Tomb Raider on the Playstation game console. The latest game in the series has DirectX 10.0 features and a framerate cap of about 121 FPS. The Radeon HD 5770 in CrossfireX mode maxes out the frame rate cap at 118+ fps. 1920x1200 resolutions were not nearly maxed out on the HD 5770 in CrossfireX mode and are about 5% slower on the HD 5750 in Crossfire mode.

One of my earliest memories as a gamer was the release of Wolfenstein 3D on the PC many years ago. The original Wolfenstein was an early game much like Ultima was for the computer. Wolfenstein 3D was the first 3D game to really capture the imagination of game players, but would be considered crude by today’s standards graphics.

Tom Clancy is one of my favorite writers of all time with books like the Hunt for Red October and Patriot Games great novels. Tom Clancy’s HAWX is the first DirectX 10.1 game to be released. This game mainly used the new features to speed up performance in cards that support it. Two of the HD 5770 cards perform up to 50% faster than a single card at the resolution of 1920x1200 with playable frame rates throughout the performance spectrum. There are many more games that will be able to take advantage of CrossFire mode and this will increase the appeal for this technology.
