The GIGABYTE GV-N260SO-896I card is based upon NVIDIA’s GT200 chip which is manufactured on TSMC’s 55nm fabrication process. The chip has 1.4 Billion transistors which was the biggest chip in transistor count until this week’s HD 5870 launch. The card uses the Core 216 version of the GTX 260 chip, meaning that it has 216 Stream Processors.

I’ve covered the features of the GeForce GTX 260 series ad nauseum on many other reviews so today I will focus on the features GIGABYTE brings with their new card. These include the Ultra Durable features, the GPU Gauntlet, the Super Overclock and support for HDMI out of the box. NVIDIA features including CUDA, PhysX, Shader Model 4.0 haven’t changed since the 8800GTX launch.

GIGABYTE says their card is Super Overclocked with a core clock speed of 680MHz. The reference GeForce GTX260 216 Core is clocked at 576MHz so this is a 104MHz overclock from the reference clock. The Shader Clock has been tuned to 1466MHz from the 1242 reference clock. The memory clock has been boosted big-time to 1250MHz/2500MHz effective. The GTX260 216 core has a 448-bit memory bus meaning that total memory bandwidth is 140GB/second.

GIGABYTE’s GPU Gauntlet consists of three facets full-throttle performance tuning, optimized thermal efficiency and expert power switching. GIGABYTE used a proprietary database analysis system to investigate GPU core shader and memory clocks. They used Furmark, 3DMark Vantage and other tests to verify stable overclocking to get the 680/1466/2500 core/shader/memory clocks on the GTX 260 216 Core card.

GIGABYTE guarantees a 1500RPM fan speed when the card is running highly rated 3D games and physics accelerated games. The card uses a low-noise fan that does not kick in with high noise even at maximum speed. According to GIGABYTE the GTX 260 Super OC delivers a 25% increase compared to a standard GTX 260 card. The card also is guaranteed to have the same overclocking capability as a regular GTX 260 dual-fan card but with lower power consumption.

Ultra Durable when applied to the graphics card has the following facets: Tier 1 Samsung and Hynix Memory, Ferrite Core Chokes, Japanese Solid Capactiors, Low RDS (on) MOSFET, and a 2oz copper PCB. The 2oz copper means that this card has double the traditional 1oz copper used in most video cards, lowering temperatures and increasing overclocking. Ultra Durable VGA promises Tier 1 Samsung/Hynix memory that has been fully tested. The solid capacitors have a longer lifetime than traditional capacitors.
