Intel sent a kit with the two CPUs, a DP55KG Extreme motherboard and two different cooling solutions for the review. Itís interesting to note that they recommended we use the Thermalright CPU cooler for high performance testing. As weíll see in the performance segment Turbo Boost works as advertised on this motherboard and it can make a dramatic difference in performance.

The LGA-1156 Socket is different than the LGA-1366 that we all know and love from the X58 chipset. There is a screw that is in front of the CPU Socket. To install the LGA-1156 CPU, simply lift the lever off the CPU Socket, lift the cover and remove the CPU cover. At this point, insert the CPU into the Socket aligning with the notches, lower the cover to go under the screw and lower the lever. At this point install the CPU cooler and you are done.

The Core i5 is the mainstream complement to the Core i7 CPUs with no Hyper Threading and double memory channel controller instead of triple memory channel as on the Core i7 and X58 chipset. Having said that I imagine that performance on the Core i5 will come close to that of the i7 920 with the increased clock speed of Turbo Boost when it is enabled and at full speed. The performance of the 870 should come close to that of the 940.

One thing to note that I recorded temperatures exceeding 67C while the processor was simply running CPUZ and Hardware Monitor not running any tests on the Intel motherboard. Intelís own documentation that came with the motherboard had a screenshot of their i7 870 running at 64C which seems to me to need a BIOS fix. No stability problems were noted during testing however and the CPU ran much cooler on the other boards we tested.
