Western Digital's new AV-GP drive is made up of four 500GB platters stacked on top one another to achieve the 2TB capacity. The drive has a variable spindle speed running between 5400 and 7200 RPM depending on what the drive is doing. The drive is a standard 3.5 size offering SATA connections and 3 Gb/sec SATA with NCQ. Native Command Queuing is a technology designed to increase performance of SATA Hard Discs under certain situations by allowing the individual hard disk to internally optimize the order in which received read and write commands are being executed. This makes transferring multiple files at a time go faster and without the drive getting bogged down as the NCQ feature makes a more direct path across the disc it is reading. There are no longer any Molex connections for power and power is solely provided by a SATA power connection hat most modern power supplies come equipped with. WD has also joined he Green moment and Heather Skinner their PR voice has even been seen in Washington DC discussing WDs contribution and commitment to meeting the Green standard. There is nothing really that technologically advanced on the new 2TB, it is just bigger, which for storage junkies, is better. The new AV-GP 2TB does have a 32Mb buffer and that is going to help the drives performance and read/write times.
