In my last article I discussed performance on five of the latest games on the GeForce GTX 216 card. Today I am using some of those same games as they are among the latest games on the market today. The games in question are Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, Dead Space and Call of Duty World at War. I added talking about performance with Stalker Clear Sky and Assassin's Creed to round out the gaming experience on today's games.

Far Cry 2 is the sequel to the best-selling game Far Cry that was one of the first DirectX 9.0 games. It uses a modified engine called the Dunia engine that takes advantage of multi-core processors and supports DirectX 10.0 features. Unlike Crysis, which runs CryEngine 2, the second iteration of the CryEngine used in the original Far Cry, Dunia runs well on most high end cards. Far Cry has frame rate in the 40s with 1680x1050 on the 9800GT card.

Left 4 Dead was released in the last few days and tells the story of a squad of soldiers trying to fight off a zombie invasion. Left 4 Dead is available on Steam and is based upon the Valve Source engine which includes multi-processor support and physics based animation in the game. Source was first used in the game Counter Strike Source and was one of the first games to support DirectX 9.0 on the computer. Left 4 Dead plays well on the ASUS EN9800GT HybridPower card with consistent framerates in the 30s throughout the game.

Dead Space is a space based 3rd person horror game in the likes of Resident Evil, Gears of War and Dark Sector but set in space. Dead Space is set on a space ship the Ishimura that has been taken over by Necromorphs. The objective of the game is to guide Issac Clarke through the ship battling these enemies. The GeForce 9800GT from ASUS was able to play this game with ease with decent frame rates at high resolutions.

Call of Duty is the annual game that usually sits near the top of the sales charts each year without games like World of Warcraft and The Sims in the equation. The latest version of the game is Call of Duty 5 World at War which is based on the Japanese side of World War II (PTO). Previous COD games were based in the European Theater (ala Germany) or Modern wars but the new one is based in the PTO. COD WAW uses an engine based upon DirectX 9.0C and plays extremely well on the ASUS 9800GT card.
