The HD4870 is an excellent gaming video card. Crysis is the game by which new cards are judged. The HD4870 allows the gamer to play the game in High mode at 1680x1050 throughout the game. The area of the game where we take the benchmark is rather heavy and frame rates in the low 20s at 1680x1050 with 4x AA and 16x AF is not totally playable. Parts of the game are totally playable at the high resolution and settings but as the story progresses the game gets more graphically intense.
GRID is a visually stunning game, easily the best looking racing game in a long time. The game played well on the HD4850 card and plays even better on the HD4870. The game was able to maintain playable frame rates throughout the races with AA and AF turned on and 1280x1024 resolution is used. Turning up the resolution a notch to 1680x1050 I found the game a bit sluggish with AA and AF turned on. Here’s where 1GB of Framebuffer memory would help. Hellgate London is a DirectX 10 game that was released early this year by Microsoft Games. The game has you trek through the town of London England overrun by demons and various nefarious creatures. The HD4870 handles this game with the greatest of ease as the game was playable throughout with a resolution of 1920x1200 was completely playable in DirectX 9 mode. DirectX 10 mode was completely playable at a resolution of 1680x1050 with the HD4870.
