Diamond ATI Radeon HD4850 Review :: Gaming on the Diamond HD4850

Crysis has been the bane of modern video cards for over a year now. The highest available configuration (GTX280) cannot play this game at Very High settings 1920x1200 with 4x AA 16x AF totally playable. The HD4850 is a good card to play this game with AA and AF on. On the maximum settings of 1680x1050 the game is unplayable with 4x AA 16x AF. Turning down the resolution a notch to 1280x1024 the game was playable with those settings.

GRID is one of those technically brilliant racing games that seem too realistic for the average gamer. Hit a wall, and the car may crash. Hit the wall too hard and the car will crash with realistic smoke and damage to the car. The demo of the game is out if you havenít tried it. The game plays well on the 4850 with 1680x1050 4x AA 16x AF totally playable throughout.

The third game I tried out on the HD4850 was an oldie but goodie Half Life 2. HL2 was of course launched with the 9800XT in late 2002 and released in 2003 to much acclaim. The reason I chose the game was it was an older game that basically launched the DX9 era. With 8x AA applied, I was able to run this game all the way through at 1280x1024 with AAA and 16x AF enabled. ATI uses this game as their reference for AA shots and I took the opportunity to use it as such as well. Hellgate London is one of the latest DirectX 10 games on the market. The game features a character with weapons such as a sword and shield to blasters trying to stop a demon invasion of London England. The game plays extremely well on the HD4850 with few slowdowns while playing the game at maximum settings in DirectX 9.0 mode. Unfortunately the demo did not allow me to play the game in DirectX 10 mode on the HD4850.
