XFX chose to use a reference design for their 9800GX2. The card is a two-slot card, meaning that a PCI Express x16 slot and an adjacent slot are required for installation. High-end cards like the 9800GX2 require two slots for improved air circulation. The 9800GX2 is actually a pair of 9800GTX cards sandwiched between a PCB and a cooler.

9800GX2 cards are high-end cards and as such they need to support a wide range of IO options. HDMI is a new interface for video cards that some newer monitors and many HDTVs use. A single HDMI port is included on the IO as well as two DVI-I ports. This gives the 9800GX2 a wide array of options for connecting monitors: two CRT (with DVI- to D-Sub adapters, two LCD, or a HDMI monitor+LCD.
