XFX's card is rather much like the NVIDIA reference card in terms of design with only a sticker change to the card cooler, with otherwise identical looking. The reference cooler is a 2-slot design. Virtually every high-end video card on the market today utilizes a 2-slot cooling design. A 52-fin radiating fan blows air out the front of the card cooling the graphics chip which is in the middle of the card. The heatsink features the XFX logo, the GeForce 9800GTX logo and BLACK EDITION over the front of the card.

The 9800GTX has 512MB of memory onboard arranged in 8 memory chips of 64MB each chip. XFX has clocked the memory at 2.28GHz, which is only a 80MHz higher clock than the NVIDIA reference clock for this card. The memory is covered by the heatsink of the video card, but it should be the same memory as used on other 9800GTX cards as it is only slightly overclocked from the reference memory speed.

Two 6-pin power connectors are required to be hooked up in order to run this video card. NVIDIA chose to require two connectors for their high end cards like the 9800GTX and 9800GX2. In terms of power draw, the XFX 9800GTX should consume a little more than the 156W of maximum power that a regular 9800GTX needs to operate as it is higher clocked than the 9800GTX reference design in both core and Shader clock. Monitor connections have changed since the days when a 9-pin monitor connection or 25 pin D-Sub connection on an IBM-AT computer. Today, the D-Sub connection has given way to Dual-Link DVI connections that can drive a 30 inch monitor to resolutions of 2560x1600. Two Dual Link DVI connections sit on the IO of the card. You can run up to two monitors whether they are LCD, CRT or HDMI monitors with adapters.
