The 8800GT 256MB version is slower than the 8800GT 512MB version especially in games when AA and AF is enabled. Crysis is a game that taxes a lot of systems with even the vaunted 3870X2 in CrossfireX mode or two 9800GX2s struggling with 1920x1200 4x AA 16x AF. The 8800GT can play this game with 1280x1024 resolution and 4x AA 16x AF when the BIOS is flashed to 512MB at a decent framerate though not totally playable, turning off AA and AF allowed this game to be playable at High Settings. 256MB is really not enough framebuffer memory to run at those settings.
The recently released demo Lego Indiana Jones the Original Adventure is based upon the Indiana Jones movies that started with Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom followed by the third movie Indiana Jones and the Lost Crusade. The 8800GT plays this game without problem at 1920x1200 resolutions. The game is a fun look at the original movies just in time for the fourth movie to be released. The third game I tried with the 8800GT 256MX is the racing game Race Driver: GRID. The demo is available off several websites. The game itself is due to be released in a few short days. Racing games are excellent showcases of anti-aliasing on a video card as AA really shines when applied to in-motion cars. The ECS 8800GT played through this game with ease, with 1280x1024 4x AA 16x AF fully playable.
