The first thing you’ll notice about the card is the double slot cooler that the AKIMBO brings to the table. The cooler is designed to fit in any computer case that has two open slots with the first being a PCI Express x16 slot. The 8800GT is a PCI Express 2.0 video card meaning that it will have up to 8GB/second of bandwidth from the card to the system. The rear of the card has a heatsink and heat-pipe to further keep the temperatures down on the card.

The AKIMBO has 16 64MB memory sticks bringing the total onboard memory on the card to 1 Gigabyte. It wasn’t that long ago when 1GB was the average memory in a computer system, but today 2GB is the norm. Extra memory can improve performance when high resolutions and anti-aliasing are enabled as the video card doesn’t need to use system memory to run.

The card has a 6-pin power connector that provides extra power to the video card that the PCI Express slot cannot provide. As the PCI Express 2.0 bus can provide 75W of power to a video card that means that the 8800GT requires more than 75W to operate. The 9800GTX requires two 6-pin power connectors, and the 9800GX2 requires an 8-pin power connector and a 6-pin power connector to operate, by comparison.

The IO of the card contains two Dual-Link DVI connections. Large LCD monitors like the Dell 30” monitors can have a resolution of up to 2560x1600. Two of these monitors require two Dual-Link DVI connections to drive them both at the maximum resolution. The 8800GT can also run two analog CRT monitors with included adapters. TV-Out ports have given way to HDTV ports that allow the video card to connect to an HDTV.
