HD Tach shows the performance of burst speed, sequential read speed, random access time, CPU utilization, and average read speeds. For our purposes we used the average read speed test and the random access seek time test, as those are most relevant to Hard Drive performance. You can see that the Velociraptor beats the regular Raptor by almost 60% in average read speeds which is a huge increase. The Burst speeds are over double as well, wow!

The second part of the HD Tach I’d like to focus on is random access seek time. With a 7.2ms average random access seeks time on the HD Tach test, the Velociraptor is faster than the 74GB WD Raptor, a large speed increase. Considering that the average seek time on the Raptor is 1.2ms faster on the spec sheet, this is pretty close to a perfect indication of a test showing the performance difference that the specification sheet indicates.
