Lapping Liquid

Lapping Action
Lapping is a technique that is used to make a surface completely flat and allows for a better seal between the CPU and heatsink. We took this technique to the outer limits and resurfaced not one, but two of Intel’s latest and greatest CPUs in an effort to get the best possible performance. This was a blast to watch and see in action and many people never get to see or even think about this technique.

Heatsinks
Swiftech has a very large and quite old-school lapping machine that you can see Gabe getting down and dirty with in the pics shown here. The machine is accurate to a millionth of an inch and only takes a few minutes to get excellent results that usually exceed the average heatsink surface. The final touches are done by hand with diamond powder to insure the smoothness of the surface and then buffed to a gleaming glossy copper. Both CPUs looked completely different after they were lapped, which also erased all information about the CPU to, but they sure looked pretty awesome when they were done.
