XFX GeForce 8600GTS XXX Video Card Review

The new XFX 8600GTS is a single slot card that actually only takes up one slot as the heatsink lies very flush on the card and offers a true single slot solution. The card is based off NVIDIA's reference design with no technical modifications being evident. There is however a nice XFX sticker attached that looks really cool! No one really varies too far off NVIDIA's reference design as far as the eye can tell. The thing that separates the top dog card slingers is the parts they use and the clock speeds they are able to achieve in their design.

Unlike the big bad toys in the 8800 series that require dual power inputs and vast power requirements, the XFX 8600GTS uses a single connector that draws only 71 Watts of power. This will be a big plus for users with power supplies that only have 300/350 Watts of available power. The cards heatsink is attached in the usual fashion, with the heatsink locked in place by a four screws and separated from the card by spacers. The actual contact of the last few generation's heatsinks to the card and the cards memory does leave a bit to be desired as the spacers are not the best at dissipating heat. Better cooling requires a much bigger investment and that would push the price up, therefore they do it this way to keep prices down.

The SLI finger connector is easily connected and offers no resistance using the ASUS SLI connection cable we used during testing. The card features the ROHS Green standard and has the sticker stating that fact on the back side of the card. The model number is clearly identified as well on the back side of the card. XFX is still using that neat black PCB that looks cool in custom system builds, but the lighted XFX logo seen on other cards is absent on the 8600 series. There is not much you can say about the way a VGA card is laid out and the importance of where connections are is much more forgiving than motherboards as you only have three connections available on a VGA card, the SLI finger, the power and the actual PCI slot interface itself. The only thing that could have been better was a little tinkering if the cards cooling apparatus to something a bit better, but overall everything is fine.
