Mushkin XP2-6400 Memory Review :: Overclocking

When one has a good motherboard for overclocking, it becomes a simple process, to which only good things may come. Yet, when the frequency of DDR2 marches forever onward and one is stuck with an archaic processor, his memory clocks will have a limit. In that spirit, current times call for latencies to drop before the higher clocks can take place. How did the modules do in this regard? Straight out of the gate, I tried dropping the latencies to their lowest possible point, with a voltage of 2.3V. The result? I was easily able to operate these modules at PC2-6400 speeds with CAS-3 Latencies.

Unfortunately, CAS3 seems to be quite a fickle thing on this ASUS motherboard of mine, so soon it had to be jettisoned, and replaced by the rated CAS 4. With these stock latencies (4-4-3), I was easily able to make It to the first leapfrog point, of 888MHz.

From 888MHz, I was again easily able to move up the second "waypoint" of sorts, 960MHz. With the ease to which I struck this point, I was emboldened, and sure of what would come next.

What was next? An easy 1,000 MHz with CAS4, and 2.3V, which is very nice to see. Now, the problem here is that I know these modules have more, that they can go further.

Did they? Well, not willingly. The first weak link in the chain was the Big Typhoon. I tried replacing it with the Nautilus 500, but even that failed to cope with the heat after 4 minutes. So what did I do? Pull some bestial H20 equipment from the closet, feed the CPU a bit more voltage, give the ram 2.35V aaand...

aaand it was time to watch these modules soar. Peaking out with a 266MHz overclock was nothing short of incredible, and considering that this is only the second set I have EVER used to reach these speeds, I would say I'm damn impressed.
