XFX GeForce 7950 GX2 XXX Edition Video Card Review

NVIDIA still remains creative and obsessed with dominating the 3D arena, and guess what? They are wining the game. ATI has severely taken a beating the last few quarters and this is due to many factors including poor PR, weak communication and a lack of connecting with the core gamer audience the X series of cards needs to survive. Sales are way down for ATI in the desktop discreet card business, and if they do not revamp and get back in touch and tune with the media and the enthusiast group the All In Wonder series will be their only serious viable product for ATI's desktop division. For now NVIDIA rules the day. The XFX 7950GX2 XXX is a quiet-running card as well compared with previously released high-end NVIDIA solutions. Yeah no more hair dryers in my PC, hurrah-hurrah!

SLI has taken off and over the Dual-Card enthusiasts market and has fairly shattered ATI's CrossFire platform completely. Even my constant rant as well as many others about the quality of NVIDIA's 2D in comparison with ATI has not quelled the tide of NVIDIA's marketing machine. The thing is though, if NVIDIA would just address this issue, they would dominate every aspect of the VGA arena and I would be an NVIDIA fan-boy. Unfortunately I have dual roles for my PC use, one is gaming, and one is work. My work machine has an ATI card in it, as I stare at monitors all day long and 2D quality is paramount; my gaming rig runs a set of 7800GTs in an SLI configuration. Soon I hope to run a Quad-SLI system based on two XFX 7950GX2 cards, but that sadly is at least a month outside my grasp. When it gets here though, oh man it will that be one over the top system. The bundle is okay in this one and the new Tomb Raider Legends is pretty cool as a throw in title, GRAW would have been better though in my opinion.

XFX ships the card overclocked and since it is an overclocked product, trying to push it more might become a problem as the card does run a bit hot being two cards sandwiched together, which in turn equates to twice the heat dissipation. NVIDIA has shown some concern in this area as many users buy a product already overclocked and then burn the card up trying to push it even further and voiding their waranty. Take into consideration that XFX has already qualified this card at 570MHz 70MHz faster than the 500MHz standard. As far as sheer performance goes, all I can say is WOW! At this moment in time, the XFX 7950GX2 XXX Edition is unchallenged as the fastest single out of the box 3D card in existence and will challenge most SLI systems as well. After that what is their really to say about an overclocked top of the line product that is basically a single card SLI solution. This card is a serious candidate for our Editors Choice Award here on motherboards.org as it is new, innovative and faster than greased lighting. Good job XFX you have a winner in your new 7950GX2 lineup!
