ATI All In Wonder X1800XL Video Card Review :: Gaming

One of the contenders for Game of the year has to be F.E.A.R. in my opinion. First Encounter Assault Recon is a game about a soldier doing missions, learning about his past in flashbacks and is graphically intensive. On the A-I-W X1800XL and a 3800+ with 1GB of low-latency DDR memory, the game was a bit choppy at 1280x1024 32-bit max details, 6X FSAA 16X AF (High Quality Mode). Lowering the settings to 2x AA and 16x AF made the game playable in my opinion.

The second game I played with the A-I-W X1800XL was Serious Sam 2. This game, the sequel to Serious Sam The Second Encounter, continues the adventures of Sam. Graphically, the game had some issues with the A-I-W X1800XL. Turning on HDR rendering resulted in pixilated lighting in the fires and in the laser of the gun. Frame rate in the game with maximum settings 1280x1024 32-bit 4x AA 16x AF playable. Hopefully ATI or Croteam will fix the rendering issues with a patch soon.

Serious Sam 2 HDR error

Call of Duty 2 is Activision's newest World War II game. The sequel to one of the best games of 2003, Call of Duty 2 is impressive graphically and gameplay-wise. On the X1800XL I was able to play the game with 1280x1024 resolution and 4x AA comfortably. One thing to note about this game is its inclusion in NVIDIA based card game bundles. It looks absolutely stunning with the X1800XL, however, and I can recommend the card to play the game.

The next game I tried was Act Of War: Direct Action. I'm a bit of a RTS buff, with my favorite game being Act of War. You take the role of the U.S. Army, Task Force Talon or the Consortium. The single player campaign was written by Dale Brown a well-known author of military fiction. The game played beautifully on the A-I-W X1800XL with no problems at max resolution and settings.
