ASUS EN7800GT Video Card Review

ASUS decided to make a card that looks exactly like the reference card in most respects. The cooling fan is a 12-fin radial fin surrounded by a heatsink covering the video chip. The heatsink also covers the memory chips, allowing for efficient cooling of the graphics card. The cooling system on the EN7800GT has a cool blue LED when the card is in operation, like its bigger brother, the EN7800GTX.

ASUS decided to clock the core at the recommended 400MHz, the same as NVIDIA’s reference 7800GT card. As there are 20 pixel pipelines, this means there’s a maximum theoretical fillrate of 8 Gigatexels a second. The 7800GT has 16 pixels outputted in a clock, so the pixel fill rate of the 7800GT is 6.4 Gigapixels theoretical. ASUS outfitted the card with 8 2ns GDDR-3 memory chips, covered by the heatsink. This provides a maximum of 32GB/second memory bandwidth.

Input and output ports on the 7800GT from ASUS are fairly typical of video cards today. Two DVI-I ports and a TV-Out port make up the available connections to the monitors or televisions. One thing ASUS has done traditionally with their high-end cards is include VIVO (Video In Video Out) capabilities. The EN7800GT is no exception to this as the card offers Video In and Video Out with the included breakout box. Dual monitors can be 2 DVI LCD monitors, 2 CRT monitors with the included converters, or 1 LCD+1 CRT monitor.
