Setup of the AOpen mini system is a little different than the procedure required to setup a Shuttle XPC and is in some ways more complicated than the other system. First remove the screws then push off the cover of the cube and you have access to the interior of the mini-system. After pushing the little rib of the front panel to the sides, you can pull off the front panel for the Optical drive. After removing a single screw from the power modulus, slide it off at a 30-degree angle and put it to the side of the case.

The next step is the removal of the HDD drive bay. To do this, simply unscrew the top screw of the bay and slide the bay out of the case. Insertion of the HDD should be oriented with the front of the drive bay. After screwing 4 screws into the drive the hard disk drive should be secured. If you have an Optical disk drive (ODD) to install simply insert it into the top position of the drive bay and screw it in. At this point, you're done with the drive bay and drives for now. It's simple, easy to do and intuitive. Plus AOpen includes a manual if you get lost.

Memory and CPU installation should be your next step. The board on the system has 2 DIMM slots allowing up to 2GB of unbuffered non-ECC DDR memory to be installed. For my test purposes 2 256MB sticks of Crucial DDR were installed for testing. The CPU installation is slightly different than on a Socket 478 board. Instead of a lever, AOpen includes a screw. To insert the CPU, the drop shape on the screw should be facing the "Open" direction insert the P-M CPU into the socket, and turn the screw clockwise. At this point you should install the heatsink/fan AOpen includes with their packaging.

At this point in the installation, you're prepared to put together the mini-system. If you follow the instructions in the manual putting it all together is a piece of cake. One thing about this mini system is if you unplug a power cable from the power modus, make sure you keep track of where the cable goes. AOpen suggests laying the power modus on the side of the case and not removing the cables, but that's not always practical. Once everything is back into place, replace the cover and plug the computer in.
